YARNING
Take Part in the Artwork
Cameron Gelderman is a contemporary artist who explores themes of community, participation, and co-creation in his works. His art often incorporates textile elements, particularly weaving, to create collaborative pieces.
In this installation, Gelderman provides basic structures or weaving frames that you, the participants, can enrich by adding your own threads, fabrics, or other materials. The act of weaving becomes a means of collaboration, where each person contributing leaves a mark of their own style, creativity, or even emotions at a given moment. This process allows the artwork to develop organically and collectively, making it not just the result of one artist, but of many hands and minds.

MOONLIGHT FOREST
Sandra Knapp, a botanist at the Natural History Museum, states: “The next time you walk through the woods at night and everything seems calm and still, listen a little more closely. All around you, the trees are relaxing, letting their branches hang, eating, stretching, and absorbing water.”
Discover this immersive art installation featuring dancers and musicians bringing the Okanagan forest to life under the moonlight. The dancers will embody various elements of the nocturnal forest. The musicians will complement this performance with a soundscape composed of field recordings from local Okanagan birds, creeks, winds, and forests, blending with live music that evokes nocturnal creatures and the wisdom of the forest. The audience is invited to participate by slowly walking through the installation, engaging with the performance and reflecting on our relationship with nature and the unknown.

“As a Climate Artist, I aspire to engage my community in thoughtful discussions about responsible environmental management and global conservation. By representing the physical, emotional, and symbolic openings within the liminal spaces of our natural world, I aim to inspire a sense of responsibility and connection to our environment.”

WHO ARE YOU kiʔláwʼnaʔ?
This participatory and interactive initiative is designed to better understand who the inhabitants of Kelowna are. In this activity, each participant is invited to choose a colored thread, symbolizing an aspect of their identity or life experience. The threads are then tied or woven together, creating a visual and tangible data network that reflects the diversity of the people present.
As the threads intertwine, a collective and unique image of Kelowna's residents emerges, illustrating the connections and differences that make up our community.
The art installation helps to better understand the multiple identities coexisting in Kelowna and invites discussion on diversity, community, and local issues, including those related to the environment and sustainability.
